HR, The Future in 5

What Would Happen If HR Was The Biggest Team In Your Company

I am constantly amazed at the size of human resource teams that companies continue to have. The small amount of resources that HR people and talent related functions receive, especially at massive global organizations, is quite shocking! In an organization with 50-100 thousand employees or more, it is not uncommon for the HR team to be only 100 or so people to support all of those employees. I’m wondering what would happen if HR was the biggest team instead of sales or marketing. If we devoted the most people and resources to HR, how would an organization be restructured? […]

Why The Future Of Work Is All About Us Living And Working In A More Transparent World

Glassdoor is a career website that is like a TripAdvisor or Yelp for organizations. All you have to do is search for the name of almost any company and it will reveal a wealth of information like employee salaries and reviews, pictures of offices, CEO approval ratings, and even benefit details. So nearly anything you would want to know about an organization can be seen, for free! The information on Glassdoor is shared by employees about the organization where they work. This exceptional amount of transparency is great if you have a wonderful place to work. However, if you have unethical practices and don’t treat your employees well that will also be uncovered! […]

How To Figure Out Who The True Leaders Are In Your Organization

At a recent workshop for a large financial institution, a conversation was elicited about how to identify leaders within the organization. The employees were sitting around tables in various groups and no one really had an answer about who they felt the leaders were. So I gave them all paper and asked them to write down which members of their team and which senior members of the organization they would consider leaders. It should be someone whose behavior they want to emulate and team they’d like to be on. I noticed that the same names popped up over and over! So employees do recognize the leaders within their organizations, they just don’t publicly address it. […]

The Top Three Tips For Building High Performing And Effective Teams

Cisco just completed a study on how to create the best teams so I’m here today with Francine Katsoudas, Senior Vice President and Chief People Officer of Cisco, to discuss the findings. The first tip to building high performing and effective teams is to focus on the individual strengths of each team member. Know what is special and unique about them, recognize how they work the best, and play on those strengths. Second, create an environment where every individual feels their values are shared. Your team will be more willing to put their thoughts forward in this environment. The last tip is to create a safe and trusting environment where every one feels like their teammates have their back. […]

Can We Have Too Much Transparency In Our Organizations?

Transparency is a simple word with a complex meaning. Companies like Buffer for example are completely transparent with salaries. Employees can see the pay scale for each position internally and in fact, even if you don’t work for the company you can see how much money everyone there makes. Many employees are looking to their leaders to be transparent with information and with the internal workings of their companies. However, perhaps there is such as thing as being too transparent! […]

Three Strategies For Closing The Generational Gap At Your Company

When considering the generation gap that most organizations are seeing, we first have to remember that this is not the first time that we have had multiple generations in the workplace at a single given time. While it may be true that there are indeed some differences between generations, many studies on this topic find there are more similarities than differences. So what are some things organizations should do to close any generational differences that might exist? […]

5 Signs You’re Working For A Truly Great Company

If you were to ask people, “what makes a great company,” you would get quite a variety of responses. It’s one of those things that’s hard to define but easy to identify if you are part of a great company. I’ve had the opportunity to interview, work and speak with some of the world’s top business leaders to find out how they run their respective organizations and have noticed a few things that I wanted to share here. It’s great to see what there are organizations such as Glassdoor and the Great Place To Work Institute that score and rank organizations around being a “best” or “great” place to work. Still, there many organizations that aren’t on that list and are still wonderful places to work. Truly great companies have a “future-proof” advantage. So how can you tell if you are working for a truly great company? Here are five signs to look out for. […]

When Did “Manager” Become a Bad Word?

In this episode of the Future in 5 I ask the question, when did “manager” become such a bad word? It seems we try so hard to say everybody is a leader. We spend so much time trying to shift the focus away from the word “manager.” Why? Does it really matter? […]
