I had a conversation with someone not too long ago, and he told me “oh, we don’t use the word ‘manager’ or ‘management’ in our company.” This got me thinking, so in this episode of the Future in 5 I ask the question, when did “manager” become such a bad word? It seems we try so hard to say everybody is a leader. We spend so much time trying to shift the focus away from the word “manager.” Why? Does it really matter? Regardless of what you call it — whether “manager” or “leader” — the point is we need people running our organizations that are not only good at the strategic and tactical aspects, know how to build teams, and can execute a plan for success. We need people running our organizations who know how to engage and inspire, motivate and lead, cultivate trust, create vision and get everyone moving in the right direction. Simply saying that “manager” or “management” is not good or that we don’t want to use these terms really does not do much. In this episode I look at this trend, the possible impact it can have on employees and organizations, and what our true focus should be: getting the right people, not the right terminology. Listen to this episode then weigh in on the discussion!
