I am constantly amazed at the size of human resource teams that companies continue to have. The small amount of resources that HR people and talent related functions receive, especially at massive global organizations, is quite shocking! In an organization with 50-100 thousand employees or more, it is not uncommon for the HR team to be only 100 or so people to support all of those employees. I’m wondering what would happen if HR was the biggest team instead of sales or marketing. If we devoted the most people and resources to HR, how would an organization be restructured?
For years, HR has been looked at by many people as a major cost center in an organization because it does not generate any revenue so they don’t realize the value. They feel like expanding HR would be putting money in with no return. Fortunately, this train of thought is now shifting for the better. People are beginning to look at HR as a function that empowers and strengthens their organization, instead of a money pit. Imagine what would happen if for every 10 or so employees, there was 1 person in HR to represent them. They would educate, train, bring in new concepts, and even spend one on one time with the employees. The HR position wouldn’t necessarily have to be full time. Some would say that a manager should be handling this role within their teams. That is true, as well. Everyone in a leadership position, including managers and executives, should be spending more time facilitating HR roles.
If you were to devote the most resources and people to your HR team, what would your organization look like? Do you think that this would make it a more desirable place to work?
