The Future of Work in 3 Minutes or Less

I’m always looking for new ways and mediums to explore The Future of Work and Employee Experience. Originally I would just write articles and tweet things online, then I started doing a podcast where I interview senior executives each week, shortly after I did images with quotes, and then not too long ago I launched a video series called The Future in 5. Originally, this started out as a casual Q&A type of discussion where I would ask and answer a question around the future of work. These videos were usually 3-5 mins in length and explored everything from open offices to technology. I did this format for a while but then I got inspired by channels like Shots of Awe and Prince EA which feature beautifully edited videos with great background music, something which I now use in all my videos.[…]

How To Figure Out Who The True Leaders Are In Your Organization

At a recent workshop for a large financial institution, a conversation was elicited about how to identify leaders within the organization. The employees were sitting around tables in various groups and no one really had an answer about who they felt the leaders were. So I gave them all paper and asked them to write down which members of their team and which senior members of the organization they would consider leaders. It should be someone whose behavior they want to emulate and team they’d like to be on. I noticed that the same names popped up over and over! So employees do recognize the leaders within their organizations, they just don’t publicly address it. […]

What Is Employee Experience?

As we shift to the future of work where organizations are focusing on the reasons why employees WANT to work versus NEED to work, it is important to understand employee experience. A lot of organizations historically have focused only on one aspect of organizational change and that is culture. This is how employees feel when they are inside of an organization, the vibe that they get, the organizational structure, leadership style, compensation and benefits, etc. While culture is a part of the employee experience, it is only a third.

Can Giving Employees Too Many Perks At Work Be A Bad Thing?

I was speaking with a makeup artist recently and we had a conversation about companies like Facebook and Google that offer many extravagant perks to their employees. She mentioned that she thinks employees at places like this are just being conned into never wanting to leave the office and basically becoming a slave to their job. Some organizations offer perks like haircuts, dinner, free daycare, and even doggie daycare! So how do employees know if they are just being duped into working longer and harder? If any expectation is implied or stated with these perks, that is a dangerous thing! […]

How Long Does Organizational Change Actually Take?

Getting yourself or your organization into shape is a never-ending journey that depends on your goals, your starting condition, your habits, and the like. When organizations ask me how long it takes to change or how long before they can really adapt to the future of work, my response is always “right away and forever.” The future of work is like one giant workout for our organizations. It does not stop or end, as organizations work to maintain the standards they have initiated while trying to keep up with the new world of work.

Three Strategies For Closing The Generational Gap At Your Company

When considering the generation gap that most organizations are seeing, we first have to remember that this is not the first time that we have had multiple generations in the workplace at a single given time. While it may be true that there are indeed some differences between generations, many studies on this topic find there are more similarities than differences. So what are some things organizations should do to close any generational differences that might exist? […]

Why Giving Employees A Sense Of Purpose Is Not Enough To Drive Engagement

There’s no doubt that employees who have a sense of purpose at work will be more engaged and productive. We all want to feel like we are contributing to something and that our jobs have meaning. While purpose is indeed a critical factor when thinking about designing employee experiences, it cannot stand alone. In other words, simply giving employees a sense of purpose at work isn’t going to drive engagement. From what I have seen, there are actually three things that are required.

The Big Misconception About IBM’s Watson

The conversation around robots and automation is one that continues to grow and get more attention. However I’ve noticed a growing trend among business publications that cover this topic. Typically IBM’s Watson gets mentioned as one of the key innovations that’s going to replace and automate jobs and I think this is a huge misconception. I have had the opportunity to tour the IBM Watson innovation facility in New York City and speak with people that work on Watson which by the way, was not designed with the intention to replace jobs or take jobs away from humans. Watson was created as a way to assist humans while improving decision making capabilities.
