Who’s Responsible for Creating A Sense Of Purpose?

Purpose is the number one topic regarding corporate culture inside of an organization. There has been many debates on where the purpose inside our organizations comes from. Should the organization be responsible for creating purpose for their employees, or should employees just show up to work with it already driving them? For example, Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs, believes that people do not have to choose their dream job, but they can choose any job and create a sense of purpose themselves. Other camps believe that a person should wait for that dream job, where the organization is responsible for creating the sense of purpose for the employee. […]

Why Do We Care About College?

Recently I was speaking at an Education Conference in Malaysia. After my keynote, I joined in on a panel conversation. The moderator asked everyone, “Why do we think people go to school?” When it was my turn to hold the mic, I answered with the word, “fear.” So many of us are obsessed with school because we are scared to think about what would happened if we didn’t go to school or get good grades. Imagine a world where the top companies stated they did not care if their employees went to school, had degrees or did well at their universities. Would people still put the time and money into their education? […]

Why The Future Of Work Is All About Us Living And Working In A More Transparent World

Glassdoor is a career website that is like a TripAdvisor or Yelp for organizations. All you have to do is search for the name of almost any company and it will reveal a wealth of information like employee salaries and reviews, pictures of offices, CEO approval ratings, and even benefit details. So nearly anything you would want to know about an organization can be seen, for free! The information on Glassdoor is shared by employees about the organization where they work. This exceptional amount of transparency is great if you have a wonderful place to work. However, if you have unethical practices and don’t treat your employees well that will also be uncovered! […]

How Do You Adapt During Times of Difficulty?

Last week, at a keynote that I did in Malaysia, an attendee raised their hand with a very important question that I feel needs to be addressed. The attendee said everything that I was speaking about sounds wonderful and makes sense, and it is pretty easy to do when things are going well at your company… But what about when things aren’t going great for your organization? How do you continue to innovate and implement forward thinking ideas then? The good news is, there are ways to adapt during times of difficulty. […]

How Can We Get Managers And Executives To Truly Drive Change?

There has been a lot of news recently about executives and senior leaders that are being paid tens of millions of dollars to leave their organizations! Some of these are CEOs of large, global companies that are either being indicted or let go for a myriad of issues, including poor performance. They make so much money, that they just don’t have any incentive to do their jobs well! So this got me thinking that maybe one of the reasons that change is not happening in workplaces is because executives are being paid so much that they just don’t care. Perhaps they don’t have the motivation to care about employee engagement, organizational change, or corporate culture. […]

Should You Focus On Your Strengths And Ignore Your Weaknesses

I’ve heard before that you should focus on your strengths and ignore your weaknesses. I have to disagree! This is not the best advice and could cause problems. You shouldn’t focus on your weaknesses but don’t ignore them either. Be aware of what your weaknesses are and figure out how to offset them. Get help, build up your weak areas, or delegate tasks. Continue to focus on your strengths and conquer away! […]

How To Figure Out Who The True Leaders Are In Your Organization

At a recent workshop for a large financial institution, a conversation was elicited about how to identify leaders within the organization. The employees were sitting around tables in various groups and no one really had an answer about who they felt the leaders were. So I gave them all paper and asked them to write down which members of their team and which senior members of the organization they would consider leaders. It should be someone whose behavior they want to emulate and team they’d like to be on. I noticed that the same names popped up over and over! So employees do recognize the leaders within their organizations, they just don’t publicly address it. […]

Should You Have To Work 40 Hours A Week?

Why are we so fixated on a 40 hour work week? Do we need to work that much? There is shift from focusing on the input that is required to the outputs that are created, and rightly so! We now have technology that allows us to work anywhere, at any time. Just because a manager doesn’t see an employee logging time doesn’t mean they aren’t earning their salary. Tracking hours is becoming an archaic idea in the world that we live in. Instead, organizations should focus on good quality and punctual work from employees that collaborate and communicate. […]
