What are the Top Digital Marketing Tactics for 2009?

tactics

Lee Odden from Top Rank Blog, recently put together a survey of the top digital marketing tactics for 2009.  Over 1,500 participated in the survey and the results for the top 10 digital marketing tactics for 2009 are as follows:

  • Blogging (34%)
  • Microblogging (Twitter) (29%)
  • Search engine optimization (28%)
  • Social network participation (Facebook, LinkedIn) (26%)
  • Email marketing (17%)
  • Social media monitoring & outreach (17%)
  • Pay per click (14%)
  • Blogger relations (12%)
  • Video marketing (10%)
  • Social media advertising (7%)

I think there are a few key points to note here.

  • Social media advertising  is only being considered by 7% of those who voted, I consider this number to be quite low and it coincides with the recent drop in ROI from ads.  Point being, advertising is not going to be a great tactic for 2009.
  • Blogging as a strategy is going to continue to increase.  This means that a lot of your competitors are going to start blogging and building relationships with your potential users/customers and it would probably be wise for you to look at doing this as well.
  • Microblogging tools such as twitter are going to become pervasive.  As more and more brands begin to use these forms of instant communication more and more consumers and users are going to expect instant communication.  You can bet your competition is going to be on here, and you should be as well.

What other takeaways didyou get from the survey?  Any ideas?

  1. By video marketing, does that include podcasting and mobile messaging? By the latter, I don't mean microblogging; but companies sending opt-in messages to mobile phones.

  2. What is the best way to encourage the use of Facebook and Twitter by those who have expressed an interest in becoming a friend? Do you see these two social media formats as target marketing devices? Could they be used effectively to plug a Website?

  3. i'm not sure actually but that's a good point. will have to check with lee on that one. trouble with a lot of these surveys is that they aren't always clear. thanks for stopping by ari!

  4. hi john,

if people have expressed interest in becoming your friend that i'm assuming that they know they will need to sign up on twitter and facebook. however to encourage them you simple need to point out 2 things, ease of use, and value add.

using them as target marketing devices is a slippery slope, this depends greatly on how you market to your audience. of course you can market on social platforms and yes you can use them to plug a website, but you need to do in a way that shows a value add and not a sales pitch. i plug my site and my blog posts daily, but then again i also communicate with my community directly and work on building relationships.

  5. I would also add Branded microblogs and online networking communities development, as this is a powerful digital tool to interact with your audience, encouraging them to get active about your brand and add content their end.
