Word on the street is that twitter is gearing up to purchase summize.  When I say word on the street I mean:

These rumors are just rumors for now and are not 100% confirmed yet, but chances are it’s going to happen and in my opinion, it makes sense.  Twitter recently raised funding of around 20 million whereas summize secured funding of around 750k.  Those of you familiar with twitter may have oftentimes been using summize, especially during the twitter downtimes (to check replies).  It seems to me that summize has figured out something that twitter hasn’t, how to implement search, and how to not go down!

Leslie Poston posted on the Profy blog that “If Twitter really is buying Summize that says a lot about Twitter’s state of decline.”  I disagree, first of all when companies are looking to purchase another company it’s not usually because they are in a state of turmoil or decline.  Second of all take a look at the twitter and summize usage stats according to compete.com:

The stats show that twitter is nowhere near a decline and actually we can see that summize is also gaining more and more traction.  From a business standpoint think of it a proof of concept.  Twitter has seen what summize can do and knows that the summize usage stats are growing, why not capitalize on this in the early stages and buy out summize before it really blows up?  If you ask me, twitter is making a smart move here.

The discussion seems to be revolving around “will the purchase hurt summize or hurt twitter?.”  This is not the right way to think about the purchase.  The combination of twitter and summize will bring about something new and imporved.  It will not hurt summize or twitter, but it will change them.  Regardless of what happens twitter needs to prioritze and the first thing on their list should be “how do we avoid constatnt downtimes or deactivate features?”  because as Leslie mentions, there is no point trying to integrate features if twitter is just going to keep turning them off.

If twitter has the capital and can successfuly work with summize to improve their service, then I’m all for it.  Twitter needs some magic fairy dust summize just be able to give it to them.
