What We Can Learn From The Apple And FBI Debacle

In the news, there is a big debate between Apple and the FBI. The FBI wants Apple to help them access the phone of a known terrorist suspect. Should Apple hack their own phone and work with the FBI and give access to this person’s smartphone, or is it considered an invasion of privacy? There are people in both camps. Those who side with the FBI, say the FBI needs access the device, as there could be other information and leads available. On the other hand, there is an outcry, that even though the smartphone belonged to a terrorist, a line is being crossed on privacy. Where the line? This could open the door for the Government and other organizations gain access to other people’s devices as well. This discussion is now leading to the future of privacy, security, and even ethics. What Is The Fourth Industrial Revolution?

It’s almost hard to believe that we are at the 4th Industrial Revolution. The 1st Industrial Revolution is characterized by steam and water. The 2nd Industrial Revolution was the introduction of electricity to mass produce things. The 3rd is characterized by the internet, communication technologies and the digitalization of everything. The 4th Industrial Revolution is now on our radar thanks to a discussion at the World Economic Forum. It is the concept of blurring the real world with the technological world. For example, virtual reality – imagine taking a vacation or playing video games by putting on a headset and becoming engulfed in a virtual world around you, nanobots that are injected into a bloodstream to cure a person from illness, robots working in factories in place of humans.

Is Your Organization Leveraging The Collective Wisdom Of It’s People?

In 1906, Sir Francis Galton was visiting a livestock fair, when he came across an interesting game. The fair goers were invited to guess an ox’s weight after it was slaughtered and dressed. Around 800 guesses were made. Sir Gulton, being intrigued by this game, he collected all of the guesses that were made, and analyzed them. He found that not one person had the correct guess, and the overall average guess was only one pound off from the real weight of this ox. This really shows how the collective intelligence from a large group of people is powerful. […]

Why Your Company Should Stop Trying To Be Like Google

here have been a lot of articles written about Google’s amazing workplace culture. Many organizations today are seeing the press and fanfare regarding how great the organization is and are trying to copy it. Google has an open floor plan? We want an open floor plan! Google lets you bring your dog to work? We have to do that too! Google has unlimited meals and on-site dry-cleaning? We must have that too! It doesn’t always have to be Google though, it can be Netflix, Facebook, Linkedin, or any other “cool” company out there. The thing to remember is that these other organizations aren’t investing in these things for fun or because they wan all the media attention. They are doing it because these things fit within their corporate culture, values, mission, vision, and strategic direction. […]

What Should You Invest In First, Technology Or Corporate Culture?

Today’s Future in 5 comes to you from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I just came back from Santiago, Chile where I spoke to around 1,000 HR practitioners and leaders from many different companies in the Latin American and South American regions. After my talk, I was asked a question I thought would be a great topic for this week. When trying to drive change, should a company invest in the technology piece first, or invest in corporate culture first? […]

Why you Should Treat your Physical Space like Software

There is a popularized concept of using the lean approach when designing software. In this process you bring customers in, to test and iterate as you go along. Incremental changes are done instead of dumping all your eggs into one expensive basket. Basically, you make several small changes instead of just designing one thing and showing it to people. […]
