For those of you who haven’t heard yet, buying an iphone right now is about as useless as carrying around a notepad in your pocket. Why? Because Apple is having trouble activating the phones. Apparently something is going on wit the itunes servers that is keeping people from downloading software and activating their phones. What’s worse is that Apple employees are just telling everyone to take their phone home to activate it. Well the trouble with this is that people still can’t activate their phones from home either!
Can you imagine waiting in line overnight to get an iphone only to find out that the phone can’t be activated? Personally, I would loose it. Now this doesn’t mean that none of the iphones can’t be activated. Actually many of them are working, but MANY of them are not. Here is an excellt post on Gizmodo that chronicles the many complaints people are having with their new iphones. The story made the #1 spot and techmeme as well.
The issue here is what Apple is going to do to now that they have pissed off their loyal Apple users. Are they just going to take it on the chin and say “sorry” or are they going to offer some sort of discount or coupon to everyone who has purchased an iphone today. My bet is they are just going to say “sorry.” But who knows, after all when the old version iphone price dropped, Apple did over a price difference refund to anyone who purchased the phone within a few days of the price drop.
It’s a shame that Apple wasn’t apple to have a clean launch and even bigger shame that they are pinning the activation malfunciton on the itune servers. They should have known that millions of iphones activating the server at the same time would cause problems. I knew there was a reason I decided to wait to get my iphone, and I would recommend that most people wait a few months as well.

That’s why I never upgrade from my Motorola Startac. It’s worked every day since I got it in 1996, flip design, holds 10 numbers and has speed dial. Why upgrade?
@john
that is a good point, who knows then, maybe i will stick with my blackjack. i will have to upgrade eventually though. plus im a sucker for new shiny tech objects 🙂
The real value of the iPhone is the SDK and software development capabilities which can easily be overtaken by another manufacturer.
@daniel
you probably know more about the iphone than i do 🙂 the only apple product i have is an ipod! im thinking about the iphone and perhaps a laptop too, who knows.
