Is The Hustle Culture And Mentality Out Of Control?

I have recently had some people ask me if the hustle culture and mentality gotten out of control, if it should be toned down, or if is it a good thing. Putting it into context, is it a hustle that comes with being an entrepreneur and meeting the goals set for yourself, or is the kind of hustle that comes from working a full time job, working 80 hours a week and causing a burn out? Taking the first example, I can apply it to myself. While I may not work 18 hours a day, there are goals I have set for my business and personal life. Part of that is prioritizing time, so that work life integration allows time for work, and spending time with family. Part of the hustle culture is inspiring people to want to achieve their goals and dreams. While the motivation factor is great, keep in mind that goals are personal, and working 18 hours a day is not always necessary to achieve those goals. […]

What We Can Learn From The Apple And FBI Debacle

In the news, there is a big debate between Apple and the FBI. The FBI wants Apple to help them access the phone of a known terrorist suspect. Should Apple hack their own phone and work with the FBI and give access to this person’s smartphone, or is it considered an invasion of privacy? There are people in both camps. Those who side with the FBI, say the FBI needs access the device, as there could be other information and leads available. On the other hand, there is an outcry, that even though the smartphone belonged to a terrorist, a line is being crossed on privacy. Where the line? This could open the door for the Government and other organizations gain access to other people’s devices as well. This discussion is now leading to the future of privacy, security, and even ethics. What Is The Fourth Industrial Revolution?

It’s almost hard to believe that we are at the 4th Industrial Revolution. The 1st Industrial Revolution is characterized by steam and water. The 2nd Industrial Revolution was the introduction of electricity to mass produce things. The 3rd is characterized by the internet, communication technologies and the digitalization of everything. The 4th Industrial Revolution is now on our radar thanks to a discussion at the World Economic Forum. It is the concept of blurring the real world with the technological world. For example, virtual reality – imagine taking a vacation or playing video games by putting on a headset and becoming engulfed in a virtual world around you, nanobots that are injected into a bloodstream to cure a person from illness, robots working in factories in place of humans.

Is Your Organization Leveraging The Collective Wisdom Of It’s People?

In 1906, Sir Francis Galton was visiting a livestock fair, when he came across an interesting game. The fair goers were invited to guess an ox’s weight after it was slaughtered and dressed. Around 800 guesses were made. Sir Gulton, being intrigued by this game, he collected all of the guesses that were made, and analyzed them. He found that not one person had the correct guess, and the overall average guess was only one pound off from the real weight of this ox. This really shows how the collective intelligence from a large group of people is powerful. […]

How Long Does Organizational Change Actually Take?

Getting yourself or your organization into shape is a never-ending journey that depends on your goals, your starting condition, your habits, and the like. When organizations ask me how long it takes to change or how long before they can really adapt to the future of work, my response is always “right away and forever.” The future of work is like one giant workout for our organizations. It does not stop or end, as organizations work to maintain the standards they have initiated while trying to keep up with the new world of work.

Can We Have Too Much Transparency In Our Organizations?

Transparency is a simple word with a complex meaning. Companies like Buffer for example are completely transparent with salaries. Employees can see the pay scale for each position internally and in fact, even if you don’t work for the company you can see how much money everyone there makes. Many employees are looking to their leaders to be transparent with information and with the internal workings of their companies. However, perhaps there is such as thing as being too transparent! Why Your Physical Workspace Is Just As Important As Your Physical Appearance

First impressions are important. When you meet someone for the first time appearance matters. If they show up disheveled and not “put together” then you get a very different vibe versus if they show up with their hair combed and a nice outfit versus if they show up in something casual. Each appearance gives you a different vibe. The same feelings happen when employees walk into a workspace. If an employee walks into an office and all the walls are stark, everyone is in cubicles, and people are dressed suites and ties then the vibe might be boring, not innovative, and very conservative. Now imagine walking into a different workspace with an open floor plan, touch screens on the walls, and workers buzzing about actively engaging with each other. This typically gives off a vibe that is more about innovation, collaboration, and engagement. […]

Three Strategies For Closing The Generational Gap At Your Company

When considering the generation gap that most organizations are seeing, we first have to remember that this is not the first time that we have had multiple generations in the workplace at a single given time. While it may be true that there are indeed some differences between generations, many studies on this topic find there are more similarities than differences. So what are some things organizations should do to close any generational differences that might exist? […]

Why Giving Employees A Sense Of Purpose Is Not Enough To Drive Engagement

There’s no doubt that employees who have a sense of purpose at work will be more engaged and productive. We all want to feel like we are contributing to something and that our jobs have meaning. While purpose is indeed a critical factor when thinking about designing employee experiences, it cannot stand alone. In other words, simply giving employees a sense of purpose at work isn’t going to drive engagement. From what I have seen, there are actually three things that are required.
