Most of us have thought about switching jobs at one point or another for various reasons. If you are in that mindset right now and you are ready to make a move, here are some tips and suggestions for how to do so in the best way possible.

Figure out the why
Develop and focus on new skills
Leave on good terms

The first thing to think about is your reason for moving jobs–the “why”. Do you want to switch jobs because you are not getting along with your manager, do you feel stuck in your current position, do you want to switch due to family reasons, are you just wanting to move because you don’t have access to great perks? Figure out why you want to move and if your reason is a valid reason or a superficial reason. Is it worth switching jobs? Because making a move takes a lot of work, time, and effort. Is your reason really worth it?

After you figure out your “why” then I would encourage you to develop and focus on skills. Make sure you are able to build up a skill portfolio for yourself to carry with you to your next job. The skills that you bring to the table are becoming much more important than a job title or job description. Does your current company have any training opportunities you can take advantage of? Does your company have Beta programs you can participate in? Learn new technologies, absorb information, and learn as much as you can while you are still in your current position.

And finally leave your company on good terms. Even though it may seem like a small thing, leaving on bad terms can really hurt you in the future. Most organizations still put a strong emphasis on references and past experience. If you decide you want to leave, that’s fine, just make sure you continue to treat people with respect and kindness.
