wtf catAre you using social media platforms to social network? Or, are you using social media platforms for social media marketing? Or perhaps you are using web 2.0 to socially market your social media platform for social networking to maintain active in the web 2.0 space?

Does this sound a bit confusing? Good!

Anyone else want to poke themselves in the eye with a bamboo shoot every time they hear all the different web 2.0 words?  I mean it’s one thing if we had some consistency but it seems like we are just all over the map!

Have you ever noticed how many words we use to describe the same thing? Here are a few of the common words or phrases that are being thrown around the “web 2.0 space:”

  • Social media
  • Social media marketing
  • Web 2.0
  • Social networking
  • Social media platforms
  • Social networking platforms

Is twitter a social media platform or a social networking platform? What about facebook, linkedin, jaiku, and myspace? Are all of these companies under the web 2.0 umbrella?

I’m not going to begin to try to define all of the words and terms mentioned above because ultimately I think we are all talking about the same thing, interaction with one another. Users want to know how they can meet other people online who share common interests, stalk lovers, etc. Marketers want to know how they can make money from people who are looking to stalk their lovers, find other people with common interests, etc.

Isn’t media the same as social media? I mean is there a media that is now not social? Where did all of these terms come from? Ever hear that Eskimos have over 100 ways to refer to snow (don’t know if that’s true)? Well it feels like we have over 100 ways to refer to social media, I mean web 2.0, I mean…you know what I mean.
