In a world where we are always connected it’s become increasingly difficult to disconnect. This means that it’s always easier for us to keep working and never shut off. In competitive environments working 50, 60, or 70 hour weeks is not uncommon. But has this gotten out of control? Several celebrity business owners and pundits have been advocating the hustle culture and mentality and saying that you work 12-15 hour days almost appears to be a badge of honor. Meanwhile we have high disengagement rates, employee tenure is shrinking, we are always stressed out, obesity is becoming an epidemic, and employees are starting to care about more than just a paycheck.

Of course we have to put this in context. After all, if your an entrepreneur working to build a business and work long hours by choice then thats not the same thing as someone who works for a large accounting firm that is forced to work long hours. In many organizations working long hours is sometimes done by choice when in reality it’s part of an unwritten expectation.

Personal goals and life stages are also important to consider. Part of the hustle culture is inspiring people to achieve their goals and I’m all for that. While the motivation factor is great we all need to look at this through our own personal lens and not through the lens of a celebrity business personality.
