Word on the street is that Hotmail is going to be getting an update this week, now I can’t speak for everyone out there but personally I could care less.  First of all giving anyone a “hotmail” email address just sounds like something you grow out of in high school (not sure if you can have a “live” email add yet, anyone know?).  I always felt weird telling someone to email me at ‘[email protected],’ it just doesn’t sound professional or classy.  Gmail, AOL, and Yahoo all sound a bit more professional and serious.  I have yet to meet an executive, business professional, job seeker, or businessman of any kind who is using “hotmail.”

Quite frankly I’m already a Gmail user and I like it just fine, I’m already familiar with the platform and have a pretty good email address.  Not to mention that hotmail deleted all of my old emails which made me a little bit bitter.  The point is I don’t see Microsoft or “hotmail” making any type of aggressive push to acquire new users, they are releasing an update, so what?  It’s just not enough in my opinion.  Google did a great job of promotion their service with the word of mouth invite only approach and as a result users flocked by the millions, but hotmail?

I remember the only reason I created a hotmail account years ago was because it was free and gmail didn’t exist yet, but once gmail came out the rest was history.  Creating updates is great for the existing user base (I don’t even know it the hotmail user base is growing anymore) but in order to succeed you have to try to take away users from some of the other email platforms out there.  Of course, this could just be the jet lagged, awake on 4 hours of sleep, and extremely caffinated jacob morgan talking, but I just don’t care about the hotmail update, do you?
