What's in store for the Future of Social Media Marketing?

I had some thoughts on the future of social media and marketing and wanted to share them with you.

As we progress in our evolution of marketing we are going to shift to a much more analytical approach (on the back end). Over time as a result of social media the “cloud” is going to have more information on all of us then we could ever imagine. No company exists yet that is able to take advantage of all of the social media data out there and form it into something cohesive that marketers can act on, but it’s coming.

Imagine a company that is going to be able to go through all of the comments, profiles, posts, etc. on the web that will then create unique marketing and advertising profiles for all of us.  Your advertising, marketing, company, product, and services likes and dislikes and will all be organized and categorized along with billions of other profiles.  When a company wants to reach you it will select the check box next to your marketing profile and you instantly receive “extreme target marketing ads.”  Let’s say you had a chat with a buddy on aim or left a comment on your friends facebook page saying that you love the new Nike shoes; Nike will know.

I’m not saying this will happen in the next five years or even ten years, but it will happen and when it does, what will become of our “relationships?”  Currently social media is billed as being the key medium to use so that corporations could build relationships with their users, but will that matter?  If a company knows everything there is to know about me, does it really need to build a relationship with me?

The answer is, “I don’t know.”  What do you think?

It’s tough to think about what marketing or social media will look like in 10 or 20 years isn’t it?  I mean how can one know what is to come?  All we have our current trends to look at, and all the trends I see point to data, lots and lots of data about everyone from around the world.

What do you think about the future of social media marketing?  How is marketing and advertising going to change as more and more information will be amased about everyone?

Thanks for reading

  1. Yes Jacob, companies will still have to work on building a relationship. A relationship always means taking something above the average. The average corporation now does not remember you, asks *you* to tell *them* about your relationship and never shows up for dinner. So any enterprise that does better than that is now revolutionary. This will not do in the future.

In spite of knowing every single thing that you've ever said about them, the Nikes of the world will still have to work hard to create a relationship with *you*. That's what they'll need to do to differentiate themselves from everyone else who knows almost the same things about you.

  2. hey kingsley,

thanks for the response. i suppose you are right, in a world where companies will know everything about you, the way to stand out is through service and relationships.

thanks for reading and commenting, hope all is well!
