When it comes to technology there is not only a price to pay for the actual device, but there is also a price to pay for securing that device.

We have been seeing the cost of technology go down over the past several years. It now costs less to store things online, buy devices that connect to the web, devices that connect to each other and different sensors. The low cost of producing technology has led to the internet of things in that we have been able to put sensors and connectivity in almost anything you can think of.

However, with the cost of technology going down there is another cost that we have to think about and that is the cost of security. With all of the devices that we have with sensors and connectivity such as wearable devices, appliances, computers, etc…would you be willing to pay more to ensure that they are secure? For example, would you be willing to buy some sort of technology for $150-$200 knowing it wasn’t very secure or would you be willing to pay more, say around $400 or up knowing that the device would be encrypted and very difficult to hack into?

This is something we are most likely going to have to start dealing with as the prices of technology comes down, because I believe the cost of security will go up in the coming years ahead. The devices themselves are getting cheaper to make, but the cost of fixing them to be less vulnerable will not be cheap.

Would you be willing to pay more to know your devices are secure? Or are you willing to sacrifice security for price? Use #AskTheFuturist on Twitter to share your thoughts. You can also use the hashtag to ask me a question for a future episode.
