This week (on Thursday) I’m going to be heading to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas from the 7th-10th. I’ve never been to CES before but am certainly no stranger to Vegas. I wanted to take this opportunity to write about what I consider to be some of the best and worst things about Las Vegas and I’m hoping that you will have your own things to chime in with.
The Good
- Las Vegas houses some of the world’s most famous restaurants. Everything from the fancy Michael Minna restaurant to the buffets are top notch and definitely a plus. I love buffets!
- The entertainment is also second to none. The finest entertainers in the world come to Vegas to perform and let us not forget the Cirque Du Soleil has made Vegas its home with several resident shows. Where else can you see Jerry Seinfeld and David Copperfield? Entertainment also lasts 24/7, you can wake up at any time during the day or night, step outside and find something to do. The city never sleeps.
- The Hotels in Vegas are a lot of fun to walk through since they are all themed. You can check out Caesar’s Palace or visit the old canals of Italy at the Venetian. The architecture and design of the hotels in Vegas are amazing and definitely worth checking out.
- The shopping in Vegas is also top notch. You can buy pretty much anything in Vegas and every brand name store you can possible think of has a location in Vegas. It’s certainly not a place to go to shop on a strict budget but if you have a bit of money to throw around you can come back with some pretty nice things. If you’re a celebrity why not shell out 6 or 7 figures on a nice bracelet nor necklace?
- You can drink anywhere and if you sit down in the casino you can get all the free alcohol your drunken self desires. Of course that doesn’t usually go well when you’re gambling since you tend to make some pretty stupid decisions. However, if you can control yourself you should be just fine.
The Bad
- Every time you walk down the strip you get bombarded with people handing out fliers for strippers or hookers, the streets are lined with these fliers and it gets quite irritating.
- The weather in Vegas is also not too great. Most of the times that I have been there it’s either scorching hot or freezing. That’s what you get for going out to the desert to get away!
- I’m not a smoker so you can imagine the havoc the Vegas causes for my poor lungs. After spending some time in a casino it becomes harder for me to breathe, my eyes get red, and I start coughing. The smoking is definitely a big negative.
- It’s rare to find a clock or a window inside of the actual casino floor, that way the casinos can keep you in their establishments longer; hopefully losing money!
- Las Vegas isn’t exactly the “real world” it’s where people go to party. This means that it’s very easy to blow a lot of money in just a few days so it’s best to be careful. I have several friends that have lost thousands of dollars in just a few days. Vegas is definitely a money sucker.
- Traveling in Las Vegas is not fun. There are tons of people and you pretty much need to take a cab anywhere you want to go, especially if it’s freezing or scorching hot outside. There’s traffic everywhere and you end up spending around $20 just to get from one side of the strip to the other. There’s also a monorail that goes around to some of the hotels which runs around $6 for one way.
Have anything to add to this list of either good or bad things about Las Vegas? Curious to hear what you guys think!
I love heading to Vegas – it is a great getaway from Phoenix – The restaurants are amazing, and have price tags to go with it. Be sure to ask if there are any gambler specials – the Hard Rock's, Mr Lucky's has a 7.77 steak, shrimp, salad and potato dinner and a 9.99 all you can eat prime rib that are not on the menu – check it out
Ya it's fun in small doses 🙂 I did not know about those menu items at the Hard Rock. Thanks for the info!

haha wish I could help you man. I wouldn't really move to Vegas though either. Guess you're stuck until you turn 18.
I see what you mean. I’ve never been to Vegas, but it does seem to be a lotta hype over nothing. I’m sure it’s cool and everything, but all we ever hear about is the good side. The good sounds amazing, but the bad makes me question if I really want to go

I Lived in Vegas for 7 months before returning to Georgia. If you think you can go there to live you’re wrong. There are no songbirds and hardly any trees. I had about 12 people that I met around town that were wanting to go back to Georgia with me because the people there want out. The economy is the worst in any city in the U.S.. I lived in the better part of town and had a Police helicopter flying over my apartment complex with a spotlight nearly every night. During the time I was there 2 people were found dead behind the really nice grocery store I shopped @ about a quarter mile away. A stripper moved in next door and had two children about 5 and 6 that kept mommies hours. They were running through the breezeway anytime between midnight and 4:00 am. The tension there is so bad you can feel it everywhere you go. It’s not the hot spot it used to be. It’s really a sad place. The only jobs that you can possibly find if you’re lucky is house keeping @ the casinos. The buffets are awful. They have a lot of food but nothing that tastes great. I walked into a Casino for a Christmas party on Saturday night and saw about 10 old people drooling over the machines. Not what I had imagined at all. This was one of the biggest casinos and no one was there. Hardly anyone there can go to the better restaurants because they can’t afford it. The entertainment that is booked there are people that had hits 20 and 30 years ago or longer. I went to most of the Station Casinos and got some of the poorest service in a restaurant that I’ve ever received in my life. I will not go back even if I’m given a free trip I wouldn’t go. I have had more fun in Shreveport and a lot better food. I feel sad for the people of Vegas and met some very nice people but was also threatened by someone with a gun. Las Vegas Metro Police are a great bunch of officers but the Crypts and Bloods out number them. It was nothing to see someone on the ground nearly every week I was there with officers standing over them with guns drawn. When I got the money to come home I left before the sun went down. People there are killing each other over jobs but I think it’s mainly husbands and wifes who were used to spending money at the casinos and then the bottom fell out and they could no longer support their life style. The girls that I saw were as plain as me and I’m a 42 year old mom. I saw one girl there that was attractive and she was a visitor. The stripper next door most people would pay her to keep her clothes on. I think the strippers advertised on the billboards are flown in from somewhere else cause I never saw them. Like I said, I wouldn’t go back if you paid me. One good thing is there are hardly any bugs in Vegas. Dont know why. When I arrived there it was 118 degrees. My feet stuck to the asphalt when I went to my car to get my suitcase the next morning. Now, at night it’s beautiful. It looks like a sea of gold with all the lights but, one thing I told my family is you can put gold lights on a piece of poop and still make it look pretty. My advice, stay home and don’t waste your money.
I recently moved to Chicago from Vegas, It took me a long time to adjust . People from Vegas are Bright and some what loud. We don’t care how you drive cause we drive with all 52 states on the strip. The Police don’t beat people they want to conform Law and order in the desert!! you give them a reason.. then you going to County with hookers, dealers, and the rest of the melting pot here in Sin City. 20 years ago it was a family setting and a grown up playground. Now it’s $$$$$. sex sells! LEITRIDE702
What is it like to live in Henderson, Nevada? I am thinking of moving there.
