It is not uncommon to see media publications today and feel like we are living in the futuristic world of the Jetsons. You may think that 2016 is the year of bots and the year of automation. While we do have plenty of new, amazing technology we also need to be more realistic with our expectations. A lot of basic things like Siri and Amazon Echo are still in need of updates to work to their full extent. Even with the trend of smart locks and smart lighting we aren’t quite to the mythical smart home level yet. These things work well but there is a lot of exciting technology on the brink.

Just several years from now you will be seeing technology such as everyone driving autonomous vehicles and using virtual reality devices. These things exist now but they are on the fringe. Some organizations are on the forefront of developing and implementing technology like this. I was recently at an event for Accenture where they had two members of the executive team attend as holograms! This technology, along with so much more, is coming our way but it is not yet mainstream. Some organizations have millions of dollars to spend to experiment with new technology that is not yet attainable for us.

So it is great to be excited for what it is to come… it will happen, but it won’t be this year or the next. We have to learn how to temper our expectations. While there are really cool things out there it is going to take some time until they are ready to become mainstream. Pay attention to what is developing but be reasonable with what you should expect to see in your life now and be realistic about the way that it will affect your life.

I recently worked with Staples Business Advantage on their 2016 Workplace Index, which examined the state of the workplace in the United States and Canada. The report identified what employees want and need from their employers, including wellness programs, smart office design, the right technology, and space and supplies for taking breaks. These findings are critical to help companies meet their recruitment, retention, and employee engagement goals. Download the report at go.staplesadvantage.com/workplaceindex2016.
