I just came back from an event in DC where I spoke on a panel for the Inter-American Development Bank on youth employment, careers, and skill development. Like I try to do before all my talks when traveling, I went to the gym for a morning workout and it got me thinking. Getting your organization into shape is a lot like getting yourself into shape. You might not see progress right after your first work out or even after a few weeks of working out, it takes time. You might start to feel better and notice some slight changes but this effort can never stop. So how long does it take to get into shape? I have no clue.
Getting yourself or your organization into shape is a never-ending journey that depends on your goals, your starting condition, your habits, and the like. When organizations ask me how long it takes to change or how long before they can really adapt to the future of work, my response is always “right away and forever.” The future of work is like one giant workout for our organizations. It does not stop or end, as organizations work to maintain the standards they have initiated while trying to keep up with the new world of work.
