Today, we are discussing the decision making process for quitting your full time job. If you’re struggling with your current job but aren’t sure if it is time to hit the road, start with asking yourself this question… Are the needs that I consider important being met? Some of those needs that I feel are important are a sense of purpose, sense of fairness, and sense of worth. If I don’t feel excited and appreciated at my full time job, I know it is time to reevaluate my position. Everyone’s criteria will be different so set yours and stick with it.
If you find that your needs aren’t being met, then it is important to consider your income and monthly expenses. How many months of living expenses would you be comfortable with in your bank? Consider your career goals. Don’t leap blindly into unemployment… have a back-up plan (or several!). Once you’ve decided what factors are important to you, you will know when it is the right time to quit your job!

The point about ‘quitting after finding a sense of purpose’ is the most impactful one, Jacob. Often, we quit our jobs to do what we want without knowing what it is. The lure of freedom – being our own boss, setting our own times – is too strong. But unless we can make a difference, or have a sense of self worth, we end up back in the same hole we tried getting out of.
Many of us don’t realize that we can build skills required to work by ourselves while on a job. Setting a goal about what we want to achieve, and then measuring our proximity to it every 6 months is a good way to know when we’re ready to quit our full time jobs.
