I just wrote a guest post for Danny Brown on the best way to get involved in social media, here’s a snippet:
“The best way to get involved in social media can be summed up in one word – act. Spending 6 months researching and planning your social media campaign is not the best thing to do. Now I’m not saying don’t have a plan – I’m saying have a plan that you can put together and act on quickly and effectively and make it actionable sooner rather than later.
It’s always a good idea to start listening and getting a feel for your landscape and surroundings, I consider this a part of acting as it involves engaging in the social media space. Every day you spend “planning” is a day where you are potentially missing hundreds or thousands of conversations/relationships that you could be engaging in.”

thanks for reading
Good advice. You can only really figure it out by doing it. But, I'd caution against diving in without a strategy. You have to figure out why you're doing it, and for whom, and to what end. That doesn't require 6 months, but strategy-free social media is a recipe for unfocused and ineffective.
Good points, Jason. As Jacob says, you definitely need to be involved but don't run before you can walk. 🙂
And thanks for a great guest post, Jacob, appreciate your time. 🙂

oh absolutely, you can't get into without a strategy. what i was advocating was creating a strategy and acting as opposed to spending all the time at the drawing board. there will never be a perfect social media campaign or strategy, we are always learning, and the best way to learn is by doing.
thanks for stopping by jason, much appreciated
thanks for the opportunity danny 🙂
i tend to agree with your insight. Action is probably the hardest part…it is so easy to get caught up in buying 'stuff' and not actually getting your feet wet. I had my first twitter account for 6 months before venturing into making posts , following others, listening….. good lesson learned.
