What Happens When Business Moves Faster Than Regulations And Rules

The other day I was having a conversation with someone about Uber and the interesting scenario by what they became successful. Many people think it is because they developed quickly and just surpassed a lot of rules and regulations. A few companies are doing this… their business model may violate certain directives but they have the money to just settle any lawsuits that are filed against them. Even if their policies and services aren’t orthodox, they have grown so quickly and made so much commotion that it would be very difficult to shut them down now! […]

Automation Isn’t New So What’s The Big Deal

I have done a few videos in the past on automation but now feel the need to address it again. Currently, it seems like the discussion surrounding automation is all over the place. People are suddenly panicking about their jobs being stolen out from under them by robots. Automation has been around for multiple decades so why the mass hysteria now? Our computers can troubleshoot and self-diagnose their WiFi problems, we use ATMs at the bank and kiosks at the airport to check in for flights, and even ring ourselves up at the grocery store! There has been a lot of focus on software automation for many years and the conversation has now evolved to job loss and replacement. […]

How Do You Adapt During Times of Difficulty?

Last week, at a keynote that I did in Malaysia, an attendee raised their hand with a very important question that I feel needs to be addressed. The attendee said everything that I was speaking about sounds wonderful and makes sense, and it is pretty easy to do when things are going well at your company… But what about when things aren’t going great for your organization? How do you continue to innovate and implement forward thinking ideas then? The good news is, there are ways to adapt during times of difficulty. […]

How Often Should You Measure Employee Engagement?

I recently did a keynote speech at a private event where we discussed corporate culture and employee engagement. I learned that one organization is measuring their culture just every two years by using a survey of around 120 questions. I was completely shocked! Why only every two years? That isn’t often enough to check the pulse of an organization, especially since the workforce is changing so quickly. Do they really need to ask that many questions to gather the information that is needed? But how often to measure employee engagement and how many questions to ask is the wrong place to start this process. There is no golden rule… just start with the basics and core components. What is it that you are trying to measure and learn about your organization? What are the fewest questions that you can ask to learn this? […]

What Should You Do When Your Top Talent Tries To Leave?

This video is coming to you from the airport while I await my flight to Malaysia for a speaking event. I’ve been crazy busy lately but something is still on mind from the recent Future of Work Forum in Chicago. A topic that we discussed at the forum was what you should do when your top talent tries to leave your organization. A lot of human resource and talent leaders think they should be able to keep people in their organizations but that is impossible, short of physically forcing them to stay! […]

Do You Have To Work With A Fancy Architecture Firm To Have A Cool Office?

Several interesting conversations arose at the recent Future of Work Forum in Chicago during breaks. One in particular was around office design. We were discussing the office designs of organizations like Google, Facebook, and LinkedIn when an attendee brought up the point that their company doesn’t have millions of dollars to spend on office design. They can’t afford slides and expensive renovations. Another attendee said it doesn’t have to cost a fortune! In many cases, there really is no need to hire an architecture firm. That can even be a waste of money as a firm would be trying to design an office space that they don’t work in, for a culture they likely don’t understand. […]

Do You Really Have To Love Your Job?

Last week, an interesting conversation came up at a dinner that I attended in Boston after I keynoted the Human Capital Institute conference. Some of the attendees were of the belief that people should love their jobs. Honestly, I don’t think this is entirely true. On the micro level, you don’t have to love every aspect of your job. No matter what you do, there will be some tasks that you find boring or not enjoyable. […]

Why HR Needs To Wake Up!

I have to preface this by saying that I have a soft spot for human resources and really love HR people… But I’ve been speaking at a lot of HR conferences lately and everyone looks so defeated and glum. Why do HR people seem so unhappy? This is the most exciting time for business ever! And HR is the most exciting role and function in an organization today. HR teams get to be responsible for driving and shaping employee experiences and determining what the Future of Work will look like! […]
