There has been a lot of news recently about executives and senior leaders that are being paid tens of millions of dollars to leave their organizations! Some of these are CEOs of large, global companies that are either being indicted or let go for a myriad of issues, including poor performance. They make so much money, that they just don’t have any incentive to do their jobs well! So this got me thinking that maybe one of the reasons that change is not happening in workplaces is because executives are being paid so much that they just don’t care. Perhaps they don’t have the motivation to care about employee engagement, organizational change, or corporate culture.
What if executives were paid less and given a salary based on the results under their leadership? Then they would be more motivated to focus on culture, engagement, and change. It is very possible that money does get in the way of change in organizations. If managers and executives are getting paid too much, it may not matter to them if the company is thriving. Of course, I don’t think this is true for all executives! Surely there are some that make forty to fifty million of dollars per year that are fantastic leaders that drive change within their organizations. And there are plenty in smaller organizations that probably don’t make much money at all, but that are focused on making their teams the best that they can be.
However, I can’t help but wonder if a portion of executives and senior leaders just make so much money that they think, “Why Bother?” and don’t have a care in the world. Do you agree that paying executives less and compensating accordingly with the results within their teams would drive more change?
