Years ago when I was studying for the SAT’s I enrolled in a class with Mrs. Freedman. I was still young and immature, I was pretty much the class clown. I learned a lot but by far the most important thing I learned was a 9 word phrase that has and will stick with me for the rest of my life, “If it Is to Be, It’s Up to Me.” This phrase is the motivation and the impetus (SAT word) behind everything I do. I’ve always had ideas and things that I wanted to launch or try out but I was too scared. I looked for the easy way out, the path of less resistance. I got by, so technically you could say that my plan worked, but there was only so much I could accomplish or do, I felt like I had an “accomplishment ceiling” over my head and that I could never get above it.
“If it is to be, It’s up to me,” is a simple phrase with a whole lot of power behind it, in my mind the translation is simple, ” do you have to do to be happy and successful because nobody else is going to do it for you.” Funny how that 9 word phrase turns into a much longer one when translated…go figure. The point of this post is that I want all of you to think about and remember this phrase when you want to do or accomplish something. Nobody out there is going to live your dream for you or do the work for you. If you want to succeed and make your ideas come true then YOU are going to have to be the one to make it happen.
The phrase has had a profound meaning on my life but it also applies to the little things in life. If there’s someone you like that you want to make a part of your life then go out and get her/him, because nobody else will do it for you. If there’s a company you want to work for or someone you want to meet then go make it happen, because introductions don’t just fall into your lap. If there’s a place you want to see somewhere in the world then go see it, don’t expect that someone is going to invite you on a trip or that one day you will just “end up” there, because that won’t happen.
Hope this post has inspired you to go make something happen!
