One of my favorite movies is “Groundhog Day” with Bill Murray. For those of you not familiar with the film, the premise is rather simple. Bill Murray is a rude grouchy fellow who is very inconsiderate of other people. One day Bill Murray wakes up to find that he is reliving the same day over and over; Groundhog Day. This is Bill Murray’s punishment for being rude and inconsiderate. As the film progresses we see how Bill Murray’s attitudes towards people changes. I am not going to spoil the ending but if you have not seen the film, I highly recommend it. I was just thinking about this film and it made me wonder…
It so easy to lash back at people, to be rude, and to insult them. It is much harder to say something that will make another person smile or laugh. When was the last time you were in a situation in which you lost your cool? Perhaps you said something you did not mean to say. Perhaps you ruined someone else’s day, or perhaps someone ruined your day. Either way, the next time you are in a heated on tense situation, think about what you are going to say. If you insult someone or put them down, what good does it do? You only increase the tension and make yourself and other person upset. Why not try saying something encouraging, something nice, or why not even be the bigger man and apologize, even if it was not your fault. We all live once and life is too short to spend insulting other people and putting them down. Try to build as many relationships as you can and think about how you can make someone feel good instead of how you can make them feel bad. There are already enough people in the world that are trying to hurt us; we do not need to be one of them.
The other day on “The Big Idea” with Donny Deutsch, Richard Simmons was the guest and he said something that I think we should all take to heart and spread. For every bad idea you have, you need to think of two positive ones to make sure that the positive ideas always win.
Pretend you are Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, and you are reliving the same day over and over. How would your attitudes towards people change? How would you become a better person so that you would not have to relive the same day over again? Now become that person.
Thanks for reading everyone!
