Today I decided to upgrade my wordpress blog to the latest release. I have the automatic upgrade plugin for wordpress so all you really need to do is click update and it should take care of the rest. Simple enough right? I click the plugin and follow all of the steps to upgrade, at the end I get a “complete” message saying that the update was done. So far so good, I go back to the log in screen to access my blog, and it seems that wordpress no longer recognizes my password. I typed it in a few times just to make sure. “That’s weird,” I thought, but no biggie, I’ll just click on the “forgot” password button and create a new password. I follow all of the necessary steps and receive a new wordpress password, but that one doesn’t work either. In fact I tried around 4 or 5 passwords that wordpress sent me and none of them worked. “Wow, I’m royally screwed” was the only thing I could think of.
I decided to visit the wordpress support forums to see if anyone there could help me out. I posted my problem on the forums and hoped that someone could help me out. Within a few minutes I received a response.

Apparently this has happened to a few folks, thankfully there is a solution. You have to do what’s called an “emergency password reset.” Basically you have to download a file and then upload it via ftp client into the wordpress directory, then you can access a new site directory (check out the link to see what I mean). This new directory allows you to change the password.

Make sure you remove this file from your wordpress directory right after you change your password so that other people can’t access it. I changed my password and tried to log back in, still not working. I was using mozilla so I tried to give good ‘ol internet explorer a shot, sure enough it was fine on I.E. I went back and had to clear my cookies, cache, and private data. Once I did that I was able to log into my wordpress account and here I am posting once more!
