How Can We Get Managers And Executives To Truly Drive Change?

There has been a lot of news recently about executives and senior leaders that are being paid tens of millions of dollars to leave their organizations! Some of these are CEOs of large, global companies that are either being indicted or let go for a myriad of issues, including poor performance. They make so much money, that they just don’t have any incentive to do their jobs well! So this got me thinking that maybe one of the reasons that change is not happening in workplaces is because executives are being paid so much that they just don’t care. Perhaps they don’t have the motivation to care about employee engagement, organizational change, or corporate culture. […]

Should You Focus On Your Strengths And Ignore Your Weaknesses

I’ve heard before that you should focus on your strengths and ignore your weaknesses. I have to disagree! This is not the best advice and could cause problems. You shouldn’t focus on your weaknesses but don’t ignore them either. Be aware of what your weaknesses are and figure out how to offset them. Get help, build up your weak areas, or delegate tasks. Continue to focus on your strengths and conquer away! […]

How To Figure Out Who The True Leaders Are In Your Organization

At a recent workshop for a large financial institution, a conversation was elicited about how to identify leaders within the organization. The employees were sitting around tables in various groups and no one really had an answer about who they felt the leaders were. So I gave them all paper and asked them to write down which members of their team and which senior members of the organization they would consider leaders. It should be someone whose behavior they want to emulate and team they’d like to be on. I noticed that the same names popped up over and over! So employees do recognize the leaders within their organizations, they just don’t publicly address it. […]

Should You Have To Work 40 Hours A Week?

Why are we so fixated on a 40 hour work week? Do we need to work that much? There is shift from focusing on the input that is required to the outputs that are created, and rightly so! We now have technology that allows us to work anywhere, at any time. Just because a manager doesn’t see an employee logging time doesn’t mean they aren’t earning their salary. Tracking hours is becoming an archaic idea in the world that we live in. Instead, organizations should focus on good quality and punctual work from employees that collaborate and communicate. […]

What Is Employee Experience?

As we shift to the future of work where organizations are focusing on the reasons why employees WANT to work versus NEED to work, it is important to understand employee experience. A lot of organizations historically have focused only on one aspect of organizational change and that is culture. This is how employees feel when they are inside of an organization, the vibe that they get, the organizational structure, leadership style, compensation and benefits, etc. While culture is a part of the employee experience, it is only a third.

Can Giving Employees Too Many Perks At Work Be A Bad Thing?

I was speaking with a makeup artist recently and we had a conversation about companies like Facebook and Google that offer many extravagant perks to their employees. She mentioned that she thinks employees at places like this are just being conned into never wanting to leave the office and basically becoming a slave to their job. Some organizations offer perks like haircuts, dinner, free daycare, and even doggie daycare! So how do employees know if they are just being duped into working longer and harder? If any expectation is implied or stated with these perks, that is a dangerous thing! […]

Why Trying To Sustain Anything In Your Organization Actually Does More Harm Than Good

I often get questions from listeners and event attendees about how organizations can sustain certain things such as tenure, growth, revenue, and innovation. My answer to this question is always you can’t sustain these things, nor should you want to try. When I think of sustaining, I think of status quo versus movement and evolution. You can’t sustain these things when the workplace is changing so dramatically. Instead, you must adapt and evolve with the changes that we are starting to see. Your organization should move from maintaining the status quo to progressive thinking. […]

Why Treating Your Employees Well Also Helps Your Customers

This topic was inspired by a recent conversation with Beth Taska, CHRO at 24 Hour Fitness, about being a human leader. We discussed how treating employees well, having relationships with them, and showing them they are valued also affects your customers. Most employee-customer interactions are pretty standard, with the same process every time. The thing that makes these interactions important is the employee and how they treat people, or their discretionary effort. When employees feel more engaged, productive, and valued they will treat customers better. […]

The Top Three Tips For Building High Performing And Effective Teams

Cisco just completed a study on how to create the best teams so I’m here today with Francine Katsoudas, Senior Vice President and Chief People Officer of Cisco, to discuss the findings. The first tip to building high performing and effective teams is to focus on the individual strengths of each team member. Know what is special and unique about them, recognize how they work the best, and play on those strengths. Second, create an environment where every individual feels their values are shared. Your team will be more willing to put their thoughts forward in this environment. The last tip is to create a safe and trusting environment where every one feels like their teammates have their back.
