Today’s post is written by my colleague Connie Chan, Principal and Co-Founder of Chess Media Group.

Deploying emergent collaboration tools within the enterprise is increasingly becoming a business imperative for staying competitive in a global economy.  How will enterprises deploy and manage these tools to enhance business practices while avoiding siloed individuals and teams?  By bridging silos, employees will be able to share their knowledge and expertise across the organization through organized channels, lending to the long-term growth and success of the organization.

Together with Jostle and SAP, Chess Media Group will co-host an event during Social Media Week VancouverDave Humphrey, director of User Experience & Design, Jostle; David Brockington, senior solution manager, SAP Labs; and myself will take session participants on a journey to explore the following:  how implementing social business tools can lead to organizational challenges, how emerging technologies can help bridge silos formed by new social media tools, and how to make it all work in practice.

“This event provides an exciting opportunity to bring together some of the best social business media minds in Vancouver to share our case studies and discuss emerging trends with attendees,” said Brad Palmer, CEO, Jostle. “Organizational silos help teams focus their work and develop know-how, yet hide expertise and hinder cross-organizational collaboration. Bridging those silos is key to driving innovation and organizational effectiveness.”

“Often, there’s a focus on creating a new social network within an organization in order to improve communication and bridge silos,” said David Brockington, senior solution manager, SAP Labs. “In reality, many social networks already exist within the organization and it’s more a matter of easily identifying and leveraging those networks – especially where they’re needed most: within the collaboration tool of choice.”

The event, titled “Bridging Social Media Silos in the Enterprise,” will be held in the BCTIA office at Suite 900 – 1188 West Georgia, Vancouver, BC, from 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m on September 22.  Space is limited.  You can register here.  The Twitter hashtag is #SMWbridgingsilos

Social Media Week 2011 will take place September 19-23 simultaneously in 12 cities across the globe, including Vancouver, Beirut, Glasgow and Chicago. It started in 2009 in New York with 40 separate sessions attracting over 2,500 professionals and is now a growing force in the social media sphere.

Jostle, is a start-up firm pioneering a new approach to enterprise software, and SAP, is the market leader in enterprise application software and producer of the SAP® StreamWork™ collaborative decision-making solution.
